Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking experienced General Medicine Senior Medical Officers (Consultant Physicians) to join the Department of General Medicine at Middlemore Hospital.

As a General Medicine SMO, you will provide high-quality clinical care across a broad range of acute and general medical presentations while contributing to service development, education, and clinical leadership within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities\n

  • Provide specialist assessment and management of patients with acute and general medical conditions.
  • \n
  • Support timely senior clinical decision-making and patient flow.
  • \n
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff.
  • \n
  • Provide clinical advice to primary care, the Emergency Department, and inpatient specialty teams.
  • \n
  • Lead ward rounds for patients requiring short-stay and inpatient medical care.
  • \n
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • \n
  • Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and service development as part of non-clinical time
  • \n

About the Department\n

The Department of General Medicine comprises:

  • More than 40 Consultant Physicians.
  • \n
  • Fifteen inpatient teams, with six admitting teams each day.
  • \n
  • A well-established Acute Medicine service supporting early assessment, admission, and discharge planning.
  • \n
  • Well-resourced ward teams comprising one Registrar and two House Officers per inpatient team.
  • \n
  • The department manages a broad and complex range of medical presentations within a supportive, collegial environment that values teamwork, education, and continuous improvement.
  • \n
  • Regular educational activities include Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality meetings, peer review, and structured undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

About You\n

To be considered, you will have:

  • Vocational registration, or eligibility for vocational registration, in Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • \n
  • Previous experience practising as a Consultant Physician or equivalent, from a comparable health system.
  • \n
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • \n
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and clinical leadership skills.
  • \n
  • Applicants will be required to complete source verification of qualifications as part of the Medical Council of New Zealand registration process.
