Urgently Required: Health and Safety (H&S) Manager and an Irrigation Technician in the New Zealand Kiwifruit Industry .
Position Available: Health & Safety Manager
Number of Positions Available: 1
Location: Bay of Plenty
Pay Rate: $32 to $38 per hour
Hours of Work: 30 – 40 hours per week
Key Requirements:
At least 2 years or more of relevant experience.
or
At least Level 4 or above relevant qualification in health, medical or management.
Key Responsibilities
System Development & Implementation: Design, update, and implement comprehensive H&S manuals, policies, procedures, and hazard registers specific to kiwifruit, such as PSA-V management and orchard spraying protocols.
Risk Mitigation & Audit: Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and inspections of orchards and packhouses. Ensure compliance with standards like GlobalG.A.P. and WSMP.
Contractor & Visitor Management: Manage contractor pre-qualification, induction, and ensure subcontractors comply with safety standards (e.g., CA V assessments).
Incident Investigation & Reporting: Lead investigations into accidents and near-misses (e.g., using ICAM) to identify root causes and recommend improvements. Report directly to senior management and the Board.
Training & Cultural Engagement: Coordinate safety training, lead Health and Safety Representative (HSR) committees, and conduct toolbox talks to promote a proactive safety culture.
Chemical/Equipment Safety: Oversee safe storage and use of chemicals (including hydrogen cyanamide), machinery (e.g., tractors, forklifts, sizers), and PPE compliance

Key Requirements:
At least 2 years or more of relevant experience in plumbing or water works technical.

At least Level 4 or above relevant qualification in plumbing works.

Key Responsibilities
Irrigation Management
Schedule irrigation based on:
Soil moisture levels
Weather forecasts
Growth stage of vines
Operate systems:
Drip irrigation
Micro-sprinklers
Adjust flow rates and timing to avoid:
Overwatering (root disease risk)
Underwatering (reduced fruit size) thus Orchards must deliver “the right volume of water at the right times”
System Operation & Monitoring digitally and manually clearing intakes and fixing lines
Use apps or controllers to:
Program irrigation cycles
Monitor system pressure and flow
Inspect:
Pumps
Valves
Filters
Water intakes
Maintenance & Repairs
Repair:
Drippers
PVC/PE pipes
Mainlines and risers
Detect leaks and blockages
Maintain pump stations and filtration systems
Frost Protection
This is unique to kiwifruit in NZ.
Use overhead sprinklers to protect vines during frost
Be on-call at night or early morning
Activate systems when temperatures drop to critical levels
Fertigation (Advanced Role)
Deliver fertiliser through irrigation systems
Monitor nutrient delivery rates
Work with orchard managers on crop nutrition plans
Data & Reporting
Record:
Water usage
System performance
