Muslim Spiritual Carer

Mt Eden Corrections Facility  

Part time position - 20 hours per week

• Can you contribute to policies and processes to address the spiritual needs of Muslim prisoners? 

Role Priorities 

Based at Mt Eden Corrections Facility, the purpose of the Muslim Spiritual Carer role is to: 

• provide pastoral care support to Muslim prisoners across the Auckland region, and, 

• provide advice and guidance to Muslim pastoral visitor volunteers and ensure that they are adequately trained in best practice pastoral care support from a Muslim perspective, and, 

• provide guidance to chaplains and TTPCA management through policy development, the development and provision of resources and advice to embed practice in meeting the spiritual needs of Muslim prisoners.  

To be successful in the role, you will be a practising Muslim in good standing with their mosque. You will hold a recognised qualification in Islamic Studies (or demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Islam at an equivalent level) and you will have substantial experience in providing pastoral care, delivery of worship and group study.    

You will be a confident communicator with proven experience in developing relationships at all levels. You will also have a successful track record of developing and implementing policies and processes. 

An appropriate level of mental and physical agility is required for this role. It is important that you can work constructively as part of the chaplaincy and site management team and that you can be adaptable and flexible in your role, for example in responding to the pastoral needs of non-Muslim prisoners if required.   

Good IT aptitude is essential. Office 365 is the key platform - therefore some knowledge of SharePoint would be helpful. 

Experience working with mental health issues would be advantageous, as would some knowledge of te reo and tikanga Māori.
