Second Engineer (MEC2) - Temporary / Fixed-Term

Wellington-based

  • 14/14 roster
  • Onboard role

StraitNZ keeps Aotearoa moving—by sea and by road. Our Bluebridge ferries carry people, pets, and serious freight across Cook Strait every day. That reliability sits on a well-run engine room and a crew that takes pride in safe, tidy, efficient machinery.

Why this role is different

  • Modern tonnage, smart systems. Two Ro-Pax ferries on the Wellington-Picton route, including Connemara and Livia, with modern automation and integrated control.
  • Proper engineering. Compact, capable teams where maintenance is done correctly, not patched.
  • Predictable lifestyle. 14 days on / 14 days off, single cabin onboard, meals provided, home port Wellington.
  • Temporary cover. Fixed-term engagement to support current crewing needs while maintaining standards.
The role Were after a qualified Second Engineer (MEC2) to join the onboard team. Youll live onboard during your swing and work closely with the Chief to keep the vessel safe, compliant, and on schedule. What youll do

  • Plan and execute preventive and corrective maintenance; manage spares and stores.
  • Diagnose faults, set priorities, and escalate early on issues that threaten safety or schedule.
  • Oversee bunkering preparations, fuel/lube management, and water/boiler treatment.
  • Run permits and isolations (LOTO), and keep records audit-ready (ISM/Class/Flag).
  • Coach junior engineers and motormen; set expectations for tidy, safe work.
  • Contribute to reliability and fuel-efficiency improvements.
