Overview

Based at Christchurch Hospital, this role offers 0.9–1.0 FTE (36–40 hours per week) for a permanent position.

The Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) – Recovery service at Christchurch Hospital operates Monday to Friday with 8‑hour shifts and staggered start times. An after‑hours acute service is provided on nights and weekends, and staff will be rostered to these shifts once the required competencies are achieved.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care across the PACU recovery areas, including Children’s Recovery, Obstetric Recovery and three Adult Recovery Units.
  • Collaborate with Senior Medical Officers and the senior nursing team to deliver optimal patient care.
  • Act regularly in the Nurse‑in‑Charge (NIC) role and participate actively in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Precept and mentor junior staff and student placements as part of the Dedicated Education Unit.
  • Maintain a solution‑focused approach to problem‑solving and decision‑making under pressure.
Qualifications
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate.
  • At least 5 years of post‑graduate experience, preferably in PACU or a higher‑dependency surgical area.
  • Experience performing the NIC role and involvement in quality initiatives and preceptorship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and willingness to acquire new skills.
  • Strong assessment, observational, and organisational skills.
