About the role

This is a specialist leadership role focused on building compliance—ensuring buildings and structures remain safe and legally compliant even after building consents have been issued. As the Building Compliance Team Leader, you will lead a team responsible for monitoring, advising, and enforcing compliance with the Building Act 2004 and related legislation.

This is a customer-oriented role. You'll work closely with property owners, businesses, and other stakeholders to help them understand and meet their post-consent obligations, while also taking enforcement action when necessary. Working alongside a like-minded leadership team, and supported by the Manager Building Solutions, this role combines technical expertise, regulatory leadership, and a strong commitment to public safety and service excellence.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • leading and supporting a small team of building compliance officers to deliver all post-consent compliance functions
  • conducting investigations with an education-first customer-focused approach
  • maintain excellent records and/or reports on all compliance investigations and inspections
  • manage inspections for swimming pools, amusement devices, and earthquake-prone buildings
  • providing expert advice on technical matters and legislative changes
  • undertaking enforcement actions under relevant legislation and representing Council in mediations and legal proceedings where required
  • issuing relevant documentation under the Building Act 2004 including certificates of acceptance, certificate of public use, amended compliance schedules

To be successful in this role you will:

  • have a technical qualification in alignment with building compliance activities and/or have experience in a relevant senior building or compliance role
  • experience in leading, motivating, and coaching regulatory officers with the ability to develop a high performing team
  • demonstrate a strong understanding of the Building Act, Building Code, Local Government Act, and related legislation
  • be skilled in managing complex compliance issues and investigations
  • possess excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills

What's in it for you?

Join a close-knit leadership team and use your technical knowledge to support our communities to have safe and secure buildings.

We recognise that staff are our most valuable asset. We believe in supporting them in their training and development, having competitive remuneration packages which are benchmarked against market rates, an environment which enables personal growth, and values work/life balance.
