The Chef is responsible for preparing and cooking breakfast,  European, dishes and Indian dishes as per menu while maintaining high standards of food quality, hygiene, and kitchen operations. The role includes  menu planning, monitoring stock levels, ensuring compliance with food safety requirements, maintaining a clean kitchen, and working effectively as part of a team. Weekend, public holiday, and evening shifts may be required.

Chef Location: Gore, Southland

Position: Chef 

Pay Rate: $25.00 to $28.00per hour Hours/Week: 30 to 40 hours (includes weekend work and late evening hours)

Key Responsibilities

1. Plan, prepare, cook, and present high-quality meals and dishes in accordance with established recipes and restaurant standards.
2. Be proactive with menu planning and development, including seasonal specials and new dishes.
3. Supervise, train, and support kitchen staff, ensuring tasks are delegated effectively and food is prepared to the required standard.
4. Ensure consistency in food quality, taste, presentation, and portion sizes.
5. Organise daily food preparation to ensure efficient kitchen operations during service.
6. Monitor cooking times, temperatures, and food quality to maintain high standards.
7. Check the quality and freshness of ingredients before use.
8. Monitor stock levels, assist with ordering supplies, rotate stock using FIFO principles, and minimise food waste.
9. Ensure all food is prepared, stored, and handled in accordance with New Zealand Food Safety and Hygiene regulations.
10. Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, workstations, equipment, and utensils at all times.
11. Properly handle and store raw and cooked food to prevent contamination.
12. Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
13. Work collaboratively with other kitchen and front-of-house staff to ensure timely and efficient food service.
14. Follow all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

1. Have a relevant qualification or at least 6 months of experience.
2. Ability to plan menus creatively and efficiently.
3. Strong knowledge of cooking methods, ingredients, and commercial kitchen equipment.
4. Understanding of New Zealand food safety and hygiene standards.
5. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
6. Good communication, organisational, and time management skills.
