About the role:

We have the exciting opportunity for a Health Promoter to join our team based in Christchurch.

As our Health Promoter, you will Deliver public health education, advocacy and community engagement to raise awareness about factors contributing to gambling harm and how to reduce harm for individuals, families and communities.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the delivery of the Mapu Maia National Public Health Plan.

  • Supporting Territorial Local Authority submissions and public health campaigns.

  • Meeting all agreed public health targets.

  • Completing all public health activity reporting accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Supporting Gambling Harm Awareness activity.

  • Working with the Class 4 sector to promote safe gambling environments.

  • Engaging effectively with local community groups to support local advocacy.

  • Engaging effectively and build relationships with Pacific communities to build support for gambling harm minimisation.

  • Supporting stakeholder relationships and ensure stakeholder engagement is documented on the Stakeholder Database.

  • Establishing quality relationships with local Pacific community groups.

  • Developing relationships with organizations that work with people experiencing gambling harm and related issues to encourage help-seeking behavior to support the achievement of the Vision.

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • Tertiary level qualification in health promotion and/or public health.

  • Experience in working with Pacific communities including Māori.

  • Full and clean Drivers License.

  • A passion to work alongside Pacific communities.

  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Whare Tapu Whā and biculturalism in action.

  • Strong communication skills with individuals and their whānau.

  • Strong links and experience within Pacific communities.

  • A strong family-centered focus.

  • Works well within a team environment with the ability to foster good interpersonal working relationships.

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the health sector and key stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with people at all levels of an organisation.

  • Demonstrates the ability to be independent, take initiative, and prioritise work effectively, and develop ones own ways of doing things able to guide oneself with little or no supervision.

  • Strong leadership skills.

Experience in a similar role is advantageous but more importantly, we are looking for someone with a great attitude and willingness to learn.

PURPOSE

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Health

Qualifications

  • Health Promotion

  • A practical knowledge of health promotion principles and theories is desirable.

  • Knowledge of health promotion best practice for working with Pacific communities.

  • Passion for community engagement and local advocacy.

  • A knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi principles and practice as it relates to health promotion is desirable.

  • Some experience in advocacy at the community or local level.

  • Strong experience in project planning and implementation.

Relationship Management

  • Networks in the health and social services areas in the South Island Region would be of benefit to this role.

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.

  • Confident in delivering public presentations.

Legislation

  • Knowledge of local body political process and environment is desirable.

  • Ability to understand gambling legislation and the regulatory environment.

Service Promotion

  • Ability to access, assess and assimilate information from reputable national and international sources to support local advocacy.

  • Experience or willingness to promote gambling harm minimisation and the work of Mapu Maia.
