Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering. In this role, you will contribute to an exciting research programme focusing on the retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP).

You will support a multidisciplinary team working on improving the seismic resilience of buildings. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading laboratory testing programmes for retrofitted concrete elements
  • Summarising literature on retrofit performance in both laboratory and field settings
  • Performing numerical analysis to understand diaphragm demands in buildings
  • Supporting the development of design procedures and engineering guidelines
  • Assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and PhD students

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), fixed-term position for 24 months. The salary for this role is $87,772 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.

The Faculty of Engineering is a leader in innovative engineering research, providing world-class facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is at the forefront of structural engineering and seismic design, working closely with industry and government agencies to deliver impactful, real-world solutions. You will be based on the Symonds Street campus with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research infrastructure.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are looking for a proactive and technically skilled researcher with a strong foundation in earthquake and structural engineering. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in structural engineering, preferably with a focus on earthquake engineering
  • Experience conducting large-scale structural testing
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, OpenSeesPy)
  • Familiarity with New Zealand seismic design codes (preferred)
  • The ability to synthesise technical information and contribute to engineering design guidelines
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to research
