AUSA is looking for two current University of Auckland students to serve as Independent Student Advisors for 2025. The successful applicants will be assisting the Student Advocacy and Independent Advice team to provide confidential, relevant, efficient, and free advice and advocacy for students at the University of Auckland.
You will be working 10 hours weekly during semester one and two 2025 (excluding mid-semester breaks), and for up to 3 weeks during each of the inter-semester breaks. You will be provided with working space in an office at AUSA House on the University of Aucklands City Campus. Applications will only be considered from current University of Auckland students at any level of study and studying with any faculty.
Responsibilities
Conducting interviews, taking notes, researching, and providing advice on behalf of our clients (may be in person, via email, phone, or video call).
Preparing, managing, and keeping case files and records of interactions with our clients.
Keeping up to date with relevant internal and external policies and procedures; and applying these to our clients situations.
Maintaining strict confidentiality and discretion in line with our Privacy Act obligations.
Assisting to operate our front-facing Student Hub, managing and triaging in-person student enquiries.
Characteristics for Success
Policy analysis-you will be reading, interpreting and applying policies and regulations. While studying law will be useful, it is not necessary.
Excellent communication-you will need to be able to understand and deliver both oral and written information in an accurate and concise way, with perfect grammar and spelling.
Discretion-you will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times, as you will be dealing with sensitive personal information.
Empathy-most of our clients are seeing us because something has gone wrong for them. You will need to be patient, tolerant, and understanding of their often-heightened emotional states.
Efficiency-sometimes you will be managing multiple case files at once, but must still deliver quality advice for each client as quickly as possible.
