About the Role

We have an opportunity for a Clinical Director to join our Intelligence team in a key leadership role. As a member of the Intelligence Leadership Team and Intelligence directorate of the National Public Health Service, this position has shared accountability for the analytic and intelligence products for workstreams within NPHS. The Intelligence Directorate is a population and public health operational Intelligence team that is nationally and regionally networked, and collaborative across organisations and agencies.

We have three core responsibilities: to lead, coordinate, oversee and deliver actionable information and insights to support public health services and programmes; to drive system-level uplift to support high quality data and analytics services; and to lead and inform decision-making by anticipating future health challenges and potential options for intervention.

This is a hugely exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of our technological advances in public health intelligence, and leverage from our new NPHS data platform and the opportunities of integrated datasets. The primary purpose of role is to provide senior clinical leadership to the Intelligence team and function to enable the delivery of NPHS strategic agenda working toward Pae Ora (Healthy Futures). You will provide strategic and system-level advice and guidance to the Director and leadership team with respect to public health intelligence, and information systems. You will also manage the clinical team; ensuring the requirements of the directorate are met across multiple portfolios and manage partner relationships.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact peoples health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

As a national manager and Clinical Director in Intelligence, you are expected to be a present, visible leader, committed to foster an in-person (where feasible) environment and culture. You are able to think strategically and be excited to innovate. You are comfortable in emergency response situations, and with ambiguous and fast-paced environments. You are also confident to represent Intelligence at senior leadership forums, including Ministerial, ELT, external stakeholder and NPHS meetings. You are a natural collaborator, and are experienced at delivering high-quality products and services aligned with the strategic aims of the Directorate, and that meet our partners requirements.

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive clinical experience and relevant sub-specialty expertise such as public health (medicine, nursing or other clinical practitioner), infectious disease, general practice, with special interest in public health analytics, epidemiology, or informatics, and with appropriate tertiary level professional qualification
  • Hold a current Annual Practising Certificate as a health practitioner
  • Significant experience in using data and intelligence products to improve health outcomes, reduce inequities and improve the health of communities. Including experience in analysis and presentation of health data
  • Proven ability to tailor complex messages to a range of audiences including clinical, government, executive/senior managers and the public
  • In-depth understanding of New Zealand cultures, communities and perspectives on public health
  • In-depth understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the Health NZs role in improving outcomes for Māori, and in particular the role of data in achieving health and social equity
  • Knowledge and experience of public health approaches that impact on health inequities
  • Experience managing a team in a complex environment with diverse stakeholders, including solid experience in coaching, mentoring and managing people
