Hamilton Libraries is a vibrant and community-focused organisation committed to improving the well-being and enrichment of our diverse communities, as well as preserving and sharing our rich cultural heritage. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Special Collections Librarian to play a vital role in the development, preservation, and maintenance of our Whakaputu Archives and Special Collections. Additionally, you will provide valuable support to our Rangahau Research team when needed.

What will I be part of?

As a Whakaputu/Special Collections Librarian you will play a pivotal role in developing our photographic and ephemera collections as well as contributing to the overall Whakaputu/Archives work programme.

Collaborating closely with the Whakaputu team you will assist with collection management of the Archival and Special Collections and also support the Rangahau team when needed with reference enquiries. Your ability to build rapport with community members will be crucial to the success of our library outcomes.


Where will I be working?

You’ll be based within Hamilton’s Central Library Hub, reporting to the Whakaputu Archives, Reference & Special Collections Manager. However, you’ll also be delivering programmes across Hamilton Libraries, so you’ll need a full, clean NZ Drivers Licence as you’ll be utilising our pool vehicle to travel in between sites.

What’s the salary?

This is a grade 13 role, with salary negotiations starting at $70,000pa (pro rata), but this is based on the level of skills and experience the successful candidate can bring to the team.

What will I be doing?

  • Contributing to the development, preservation, and maintenance of the Whakaputu Archives and Special Collections.
  • Assisting in the management and care of special collections material.
  • Working with born digital material and digitising collections materials as per the Digitisation Plan.
  • Ensuring an excellent customer experience for our visitors and researchers.
  • Demonstrating a keen interest in local history and local history resources.
  • Applying Tikanga principles in your work.
  • Collaborating effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internal and external.

What kind of person are you looking for?

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience within libraries or archive sectors.
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of Tikanga Maaori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Previous experience in managing and caring for special collections material, including heritage items.
  • Familiarity with born digital material and/or digitisation processes.
  • Flexibility to work on a 7-day roster, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Can I work flexibly?

Unfortunately, no. You’ll be part of a team with a weekly roster that will include evenings, late nights and weekend work. All together, youll be working 37.5 hours per week.
