About the Role

Our Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (CTSU) at Auckland City Hospital is the highest volume unit in New Zealand and Australasia. We are seeking an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join our dedicated team of Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Professionals. The ability to cover the full range of emergency surgery is essential due to the high volume of emergency cases for the on-call surgeon.

We provide tertiary care mainly for Auckland and the Northern region, as well as high-risk patients from across New Zealand. We are the National Heart & Lung Transplant Unit and National ECMO Centre.

About the Team/Service/Location

Located in Auckland, one of the worlds most liveable cities, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at Auckland City Hospital is the largest Cardiac Surgery Centre in New Zealand, offering a full range of cardiothoracic surgeries including ischemic and rheumatic heart disease, aortic surgery, and lung cancer surgery.

The CTSU is part of the wider Cardiovascular Directorate, home to the National Heart and Lung Transplant Service and the national ECMO centre, with a retrieval service.

The unit handles approximately 1200 cardiac surgery cases per year, working alongside a dedicated 26-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

About You

The ideal candidate will be a senior Surgeon with skills in both Cardiac and Thoracic surgery.

  • You will have or be eligible for vocational registration with the NZ Medical Council in Cardiothoracic Surgery, and ideally be a member of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
  • Experience in heart and lung transplantation is desirable.
