Mō te Tūranga | About the Role Our Specialised Finance team originates, structures, and executes project finance solutions across a wide range of sectors including energy, utilities, property and public infrastructure. The New Zealand Governments infrastructure investment initiatives, and aim to be net zero by 2050 is driving significant investment across the public and private sectors, resulting in a strong pipeline of transactions. We currently have an exceptional opportunity in Auckland for a highly ambitious and motivated Director, Specialised Finance, to lead and manage all aspects of the transactions (i.e. origination, structuring, and execution), as well as managing a portfolio of existing assets. We spoke with the Head of Infrastructure Government & Specialised Finance (who youd report to), and she gave us some great insight on what to expect with this tūranga (role): What are some day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?
  • Transaction structuring and execution: Leading a high achieving team and working with colleagues across BNZ and NAB (e.g. capital markets, sustainable finance, risk) and external stakeholders (e.g. customers, lawyers, advisors) to originate, structure, execute and document bespoke financial solutions for specialised project finance transactions.
  • Market engagement: Maintaining and growing your external networks to keep up to date with market knowledge and identify prospect transactions.
  • Risk management: Managing and facilitating credit processes.
  • Leadership and training: Develop, coach and mentor the Specialised Finance team, challenging and inspiring them to develop their capabilities.
  • Portfolio management: Lead the management and monitoring of a portfolio of existing assets.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity? You are joining the team at an incredibly exciting time, the New Zealand Governments infrastructure investment initiatives (e.g. Public Private Partnerships), and net zero targets, are driving investment across a range of sectors. Renewable energy and green fuels will be a major focus for the role, supporting the electrification and decarbonisation of New Zealand industry and electricity markets. As a Director, Specialised Finance, you will lead and drive all aspects of these transactions (i.e. origination, structuring and execution), leveraging your knowledge of the industry and emerging trends to develop innovative solutions to help New Zealand solve the infrastructure deficit. What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role? This position is a key role within the Institutional Banking team and as such requires someone with strong commercial acumen, resilience and leadership skills. Among other things, our preferred candidate will have the following:
  • Experience leading the structuring and negotiation of Project Finance transactions with an excellent understanding of risk allocation, credit assessment and documentation
  • Sound understanding of accounting, legal and tax issues, and financial modelling
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, and strong attention to detail
  • Strong relationship building skills and an extensive network
  • Negotiation skills at a senior management (CFO, CEO, Board) level
  • Proven people leadership capabilities
