Job Description

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Dressmaker or Tailor who has excellent skills in garment construction, alteration, and custom fittings. You will work closely with customers to bring their visions to life or provide perfect alterations on a wide range of clothing including formalwear, ethnic wear, and casual outfits.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, cut, sew, and alter garments to fit individual customers
• Interpret and work from sketches, patterns, or specifications
• Consult with clients on styles, fabrics, and measurements
• Make and adjust patterns as needed
• Operate industrial sewing machines and hand-sewing techniques
• Maintain clean and safe workspaces
• Manage garment fittings and alterations in a timely manner
• Maintain a high standard of craftsmanship and attention to detail

Skills & Experience Required

• Proven experience as a Dressmaker, Tailor, or similar role
• Strong knowledge of garment construction, fabrics, and tailoring techniques
• Ability to take precise measurements and make accurate alterations
• Pattern-making and design skills preferred
• Excellent attention to detail and customer service skills
• Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines
• Familiarity with ethnic/traditional wear (e.g., sarees, lehengas, suits) is a plus

Minimum Requirements

• Work Experience or Qualification

The applicant must meet one of the following:

Option A - Qualification:

• A NZQF Level 4 qualification (or equivalent), relevant to tailoring or garment construction

Examples:

• Certificate in Fashion Technology
• Certificate in Apparel and Textile Production

(A Level 4 certificate typically requires 1 year of full-time study.)

OR

Option B - Work Experience:

• At least 2 years of relevant full-time work experience as a dressmaker or tailor without formal qualifications

This experience must be:

• Related to garment design, construction, cutting, measuring, sewing, and alterations
• Recent and verifiable (with references, payslips, job descriptions, etc.)
• Good communication skills
• permanent residency (if applicable)

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 - 42 per week
