Our job is as big as it gets, driving transformation of New Zealands infrastructure system to ensure we get more value from the assets we already have and that we are well equipped to deliver the new solutions we need as our economy grows. Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

The Private Secretary provides high-level administrative, organisational, and strategic support to the Minister and other office and Parliamentary staff in order to support an effective working relationship between Te Waihanga and the Minister and to support the Minister in carrying out their role.

Reporting to the Manager Ministerial Services, the Private Secretary role requires someone who is able to hit the ground running in terms of their knowledge of the infrastructure portfolio, Parliamentary processes and machinery of Government. You will be able to undertake a significant workload, effectively manage a range of tasks and demonstrate a high degree of professional judgement in recognising degrees of urgency and importance and political nuance. A flexible approach to work is valued, along with excellent communication skills. Youll be working alongside other Private Secretaries, supporting our wider connection to the infrastructure system leadership.

Youll bring an excellent understanding of existing government, parliamentary and public service protocols and processes, have experience preparing and facilitating briefings and advice, correspondence, Official Information Act requests and parliamentary questions, and operating at the political interface.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring seamless communication and coordination between Te Waihanga, other key stakeholders and the Minister.
  • Ensuring the effectiveness of advice Te Waihanga is providing.
  • Fostering and contributing to a positive team culture, encouraging professional growth and development.

  • At least 7 years experience working in policy roles in the Public Service, including experience in infrastructure sector policy or related policy areas (e.g. transport, housing, education, health)
  • Strong analytical and advisory experience with the ability to digest a large amount of complex information quickly and identify patterns and connections
  • Ability to prioritise, multi-task, balance a high workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced and stressful environment.

Me whai hoki e koe | You will also have

  • Understanding of the machinery of government, including how to be influential particularly within central government. Experience navigating complex political situations effectively.
  • Outstanding skills in written and verbal communication, with the ability to communicate complex issues and concepts clearly, succinctly and with influence, and to adapt styles to suit different channels and audiences.
  • Familiarity with the issues and trends associated with Infrastructure in New Zealand and/or other jurisdictions.
