Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

As a member of the Otago/Southland Curriculum Advisory Team, you will be based in Invercargill supporting schools, kura and early learning services to deliver high-quality teaching and learning programmes based on the NZ Curriculum. Ideally this Advisory role has a specific focus on primary education settings.


As a Curriculum Advisor, you will provide advice to leadership teams, teachers and kaiako on implementing the new NZ curriculum, assessment and aromatawai changes, taking a whole school approach.


We are seeking a Curriculum Advisor with proven experience in leading whole school curriculum and assessment change, along with a strong background and understanding of the science of learning and relevant pedagogies and assessment and aromatawai practices.


You will be part of a regional team using the Curriculum Advisory Service to:



  • Support schools, kura and early learning services to implement the NZ curriculum, by using effective pedagogical practices that improve learning outcomes for all learners

  • Deliver support aligned to local needs and national, government priorities, using targeted and tailored implementation supports.

  • Supporting professional learning to develop pedagogical content knowledge.

  • Build collaborative networks within communities and actively share good practice


This is a permanent, full-time role based at in our Invercargill Office.


Salary range: $101,296 - $122,490 per annum plus KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have the following capabilities and competencies:



  • Strong curriculum delivery expertise, knowledge of the NZ Curriculum and recent practical experience in school is essential. Knowledge and experience from primary education settings will be an added advantage.

  • Deep understanding of the science of learning and the effective teaching practices that are needed to enact the knowledge rich curriculum to achieve positive outcomes for all learners.

  • Strong, proven expertise in whole school curriculum planning and delivery that supports consistency of teaching and learning with the ability to support professional change in education settings.

  • Deep pedagogical knowledge, both the underlying expertise and the ability to build others knowledge. Please state your area of pedagogical expertise in your application.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective partnerships to drive change, using strong interpersonal, facilitation, and diplomacy skills. Skilled in leading, motivating, and coaching kaiako, teachers and leaders to build capability and implement change

  • Familiarity with te ao Māori and understanding of Te Reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori.

  • A full current NZ driver licence as travel will be required.

  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct

Te Mahau is a frontline group that collectively provides leadership and integrated services to the sector and others. This includes services such as learning support and education advice, and regulation functions for kōhanga, schools, kura and early learning services.


As a frontline group we develop and harness existing relationships with communities at the regional and local level, including deep relationships with iwi and hapū.


We also collectively strengthen relationships with our diverse communities who support Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled ākonga and/or ākonga with learning support needs, and ākonga from disadvantaged backgrounds.
