Reason for employment and why three positions are required
The business requires three permanent Duty Managers to provide reliable management coverage across the supermarket's extended trading hours, including opening, closing, evenings, weekends, public holidays, staff leave and unexpected absences. A single Duty Manager cannot provide continuous coverage while also taking lawful rest and meal breaks and annual or sick leave. The three-position structure allows management responsibility to be distributed across grocery and replenishment, front-end and customer service, and overall shift operations, while maintaining consistent accountability.
Each Duty Manager will be the senior person responsible on designated shifts and will coordinate employees across multiple departments. The positions are needed to ensure appropriate supervision, customer service, cash and security controls, stock availability, food-safety compliance, incident response, staff allocation and opening/closing
procedures. The roles also support the Store Manager by implementing operational standards and reporting on shift performance, staffing issues and store presentation.
Principal duties and responsibilities
• Manage the store during allocated shifts and act as the senior operational contact when the Store Manager or owners are not present.
• Open and close the premises, complete security checks, manage alarms and keys, and ensure all opening and closing procedures are followed.
• Allocate employees across grocery, produce, chilled/frozen, night fill, checkout, customer service, merchandising and other areas according to trading demand.
• Supervise, coach and support team members; conduct shift briefings; monitor attendance, punctuality, break compliance and work performance.
• Monitor checkout queues and customer-service standards and redeploy staff to respond to peak customer volumes.
• Resolve customer complaints, refunds, pricing issues and service concerns in accordance with company policies and delegated authority.
• Oversee cash-handling processes, till reconciliations, safe procedures, variances, refunds, voids and end-of- shift documentation.
• Monitor stock levels, product rotation, replenishment, pricing accuracy, promotional displays and the presentation of shelves and service areas.
• Coordinate deliveries and receiving activities, identify damaged or short-delivered stock and escalate discrepancies.
• Maintain compliance with food-safety, health and safety, emergency, age-restricted sales, loss-prevention and store-security procedures.
• Respond to incidents, accidents, hazards, suspected theft, equipment failures and staffing shortages, completing records and escalation as required.
• Support stocktakes, waste control, markdowns, shrinkage reduction, promotional changes and seasonal merchandising.
• Assist with staff induction and on-the-job training and provide performance feedback to the Store Manager.
• Prepare accurate shift handover notes and report operational, staffing, customer, cash, stock and compliance matters.
• Perform reasonable hands-on operational duties when necessary while retaining overall responsibility for the shift.
Minimum skills, qualifications and experience
• A New Zealand Diploma at Level 5 or above; OR at least two years of relevant work experience in a similar industry.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise employees, allocate work and manage competing operational priorities.
• Sound customer-service, communication, numeracy and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to use point-of-sale, stock-control, rostering, email and basic reporting systems.
• Ability and willingness to work rostered mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
How the role fits within the organisation
The Duty Managers report to the Store Manager and sit alongside the Office Manager and Deli and Bakery Manager. They lead designated operational teams and coordinate with every department to maintain consistent service, store presentation, safety and productivity.
