Yu Group Limited is a Wellington-based hospitality and property group overseeing a diverse portfolio of restaurants, cafés, bars, breweries, and property developments across New Zealand. The group currently operates multiple hospitality brands, including Astoria Cafe, Mian Bar, Ronin Bar, Collective Coffee Shop & Co, and others, while also expanding into construction and property development through affiliated companies.

With continued expansion and several new venues scheduled to open across Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch, Yu Group is seeking a Commercial Interior Designer to deliver the design and delivery of new hospitality environments and refurbishments across the group.

The role reports directly to the Project Design Manager and works closely with operations, marketing, construction, and brand teams to ensure each venue delivers a distinctive and high-quality customer experience.

Position Overview

The Commercial Interior Designer will be responsible for developing and implementing interior design concepts for hospitality venues and commercial spaces across Yu Group’s portfolio, and for planning, designing, and overseeing interior design outcomes across multiple venues. 

This role focuses on translating brand identity into functional, aesthetically compelling interior environments that enhance customer experience while maintaining operational efficiency. 

The successful candidate will work across the full design lifecycle, from concept development and design documentation through to supplier coordination and on-site implementation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Interior Design Planning & Concept Development

·       Analyse project briefs, operational requirements, and site conditions to develop appropriate interior design concepts

·       Translate functional requirements into spatial solutions that optimise workflow, customer experience, and operational efficiency

·       Integrate brand identity, spatial hierarchy, and user flow into overall design concepts

2. Technical Design Development & Documentation

·       Prepare and review detailed interior design documentation, including:

o   space layouts and planning drawings

o   reflected ceiling plans and lighting layouts

o   joinery and built-in furniture details

o   material and finishes specifications

·       Ensure all documentation is accurate, coordinated, and suitable for construction and fit-out purposes

·       Develop detailing solutions that address constructability, durability, and cost considerations

3. Space Planning & Functional Design

·       Develop spatial layouts considering circulation, seating density, service flow, and operational requirements

·       Evaluate ergonomic, safety, and accessibility factors in interior environments

·       Coordinate spatial design with building services, lighting, and structural constraints

 4. Materials, Finishes & Specification

·       Select and specify appropriate materials, finishes, fixtures, and furniture for commercial use

·       Assess materials based on durability, maintenance requirements, compliance, and cost efficiency

·       Prepare and manage material schedules and specifications for project execution

5. Coordination with Construction & Consultants

·       Liaise with architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers to ensure design coordination

·       Review shop drawings and construction documentation to ensure alignment with design intent

·       Provide technical clarification during construction and resolve design-related issues

6. Design Implementation & Site Oversight

·       Conduct site inspections to monitor progress and ensure works are carried out in accordance with design documentation

·       Identify and address discrepancies between design intent and construction outcomes

·       Support the delivery of projects through to completion, ensuring quality standards are met

7. Compliance & Standards

·       Ensure all interior design solutions comply with the New Zealand Building Code and relevant regulations

·       Incorporate fire safety, accessibility, and health and safety considerations into design outcomes

8. Multi-site Application & Design Consistency

·       Apply interior design solutions across multiple hospitality venues within the Group

·       Maintain consistency in design quality, functionality, and brand expression across locations

9. Professional Judgement & Design Evaluation

·       Evaluate alternative design solutions and make informed decisions balancing aesthetics, functionality, and cost

·       Provide professional design recommendations based on project requirements and constraints

Key Skills and Competencies

• Strong commercial interior design capability, particularly within hospitality or retail environments.

• Advanced spatial planning and aesthetic design skills.

• Ability to translate brand identity into physical environments.

• Strong project coordination and stakeholder management skills.

• High attention to detail and strong visual communication ability.

• Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously.

 

Qualifications & Experience

• At least a master’s degree in interior design, Spatial Design, Architecture, or a related discipline, OR

• At least 5 years of relevant commercial interior design experience, ideally within hospitality or retail environments.

• Demonstrated experience delivering interior design projects from concept through to completion.

• Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar.
