Fitzgerald Auctions is a fully licensed, New Zealand–registered professional auction house, offering both online and on-site auction experiences. Our proprietary auction platform supports real-time bidding, absentee bidding, and auction result tracking. By combining live and online auctions, we provide secure and efficient participation for buyers across a wide range of categories, including fine wines, art, and collectible assets.

Position OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Developer Programmer to join our technical team and lead the ongoing development, enhancement, and maintenance of our online auction platform. This role is essential for ensuring the platform’s performance, reliability, and scalability, supporting real-time transactions, seamless user experiences, and efficient operational workflows.

The Developer Programmer will work across the full software development lifecycle, translating business requirements into robust solutions, optimising systems and databases, integrating third-party services, and contributing to platform architecture and improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain the company’s online auction platform and supporting applications.
  • Analyse business and user requirements, converting them into practical and efficient technical solutions.
  • Build and maintain front-end components using ReactJS to create intuitive, responsive interfaces for auctions, bidding, and account management.
  • Develop and optimise back-end systems, including bidding logic, transaction processing, auction result management, and system integrations.
  • Design, maintain, and optimise relational and non-relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch) to support operational efficiency, data integrity, and reporting.
  • Integrate and manage third-party services such as payment gateways, notifications, and reporting tools via secure APIs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software or system issues, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation and operational guides.
  • Participate in system architecture decisions, code reviews, and performance tuning to support sustainable platform growth. 

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven professional experience as a Developer Programmer or Software Developer.
  • Strong proficiency in front-end (ReactJS, HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and/or back-end development (Node.js, Python, Java, or similar).
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch).
  • Solid understanding of software development lifecycle, system integration, testing, debugging, and performance optimisation.
  • Knowledge of real-time, transactional, or e-commerce systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work independently and collaboratively. 

Preferred Experience

  • Experience developing online auction, marketplace, or e-commerce platforms.
  • Familiarity with cloud deployment, hosting environments, and DevOps practices (AWS or equivalent).
  • Experience in small, agile technical teams.
