The School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland invites applications for a Lecturer position in Data Science/AI.

We seek an outstanding researcher and teacher who will contribute to our Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and broader Computer Science programmes. Applicants should demonstrate strong research potential or achievement, an excellent publication record relative to career stage, and a commitment to high‑quality, research‑informed teaching.

We welcome applications from candidates working in any area of data science.
However, applicants whose research intersects with Artificial Intelligence will be particularly competitive.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Data‑centric AI and ML
  • Large‑scale data analytics and intelligent data systems
  • Responsible and trustworthy AI
  • Applied machine learning and multimodal AI
  • Data engineering, MLOps, and scalable ML infrastructure
  • Statistical learning and advanced modelling
  • AI for science, health, sustainability, cybersecurity, or other application domains

Candidates who can teach foundational Data Science while advancing the School’s strategic strengths in AI are strongly encouraged to apply.

Our academics undertake research across a wide range of computing fields: software engineering, data science, algorithms and theoretical computer science, cyber security, communication and information technology, and systems development and evaluation. We teach in the Bachelor of Science, Technology, and Engineering programmes as well as supporting a vibrant postgraduate programme that attracts top‑quality Masters and PhD candidates.

Your contributions will include world‑class research, publishing in world‑class journals and conferences, securing research grant funding, high‑calibre teaching as well as supervision of capstone projects and dissertations at the Master and PhD level.

Essentials for this position are:

  • PhD in Computer Science with focus on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong track‑record of research as evidenced by peer reviewed publications in high‑reputable conferences and journals in the field of Data Science and/or AI

In addition, some of the following experience is a nice to have:

  • Experience as a Postdoc/Research Fellow
  • Some experience of curricula design and teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate levels, preferably in Data Science or AI topics
  • Experience to promote partnerships with external/professional organisations/agencies.
  • Experience in establishing a network of collaborators
  • Some experience in industry and/or collaborative research with industrial partners

This is a permanent, full-time role (40 hours per week)

Remuneration ranges between $99,788 – $112,730, depending on skills and experience
