At ASB, we are more than a bank. We are a purpose-led organisation that helps people, communities, and our environment thrive together. Our values of Courage, Care, and Curiosity guide us to challenge the status quo, genuinely care for those we work with and serve, and always look for new ways to improve. As one of Aotearoa’s most trusted banking partners, we offer the scale and stability of a large organisation while recognising and valuing each person’s contribution.

We are looking for a Principal Engineer who can help shape the future of our data platform and play a key part in ASB’s modernisation journey. This role focuses on uplifting how we design, deliver, and run data and integration services across the bank. You will work on complex and meaningful engineering challenges that support new and innovative capabilities, including the responsible adoption of AI.

You will collaborate with technical and non‑technical leaders, strengthening relationships and helping teams move forward with confidence. Your ability to build trust, maintain momentum, and resolve roadblocks will be essential in guiding teams toward strong business outcomes. You will also join a group of engineers who value autonomy, learning, and doing what is right for our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of complex data and integration solutions at scale
  • Support the uplift of engineering practice across the data platform modernisation programme
  • Guide and influence decisions on data platform patterns, tooling, and architecture
  • Work hands on with teams to solve technical challenges and improve delivery

  • Help maintain consistent engineering standards across the Engineering Practice

We value people who show initiative, think clearly, and lead through influence. You will work closely with leaders across Technology and represent the voice of Engineering, particularly as we continue moving further into public cloud and modern data platforms. You thrive in environments where priorities shift, and you enjoy helping others navigate both technical and strategic conversations.

You will bring depth across cloud data engineering, AI tooling, integration, and modern software practices. You are comfortable with ambiguity and experienced in large scale transformation. Most importantly, you help people understand what good looks like and bring them along on the journey through clarity, empathy, and strong relationships.

Key Requirements
  • Experience as an Engineering Leader or Architect, ideally in a modern, large scale tech environment
  • Strong expertise across cloud data platforms and tooling such as Snowflake, Databricks, and dbt
  • Experience with event streaming tools such as Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud
  • Familiarity with Containerisation, APIs, and CI/CD for data workload management
  • Advanced knowledge of emerging AI technologies including generative AI, MLOps, and agentic AI
  • Strong understanding of Azure or AWS, including cloud security and governance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across technical and non‑technical groups
  • Ability to learn quickly, switch context as needed, and take people with you through change

Our values guide everything we do for our team, customers, and community. At ASB, you will enjoy:

  • Career growth through learning and development, training, courses, and internal opportunities
  • An inclusive culture with values‑led teams that celebrate diversity and support employee‑led communities
  • Health and wellbeing support, including Southern Cross Wellbeing One health insurance, lifestyle and volunteering leave, and mental wellbeing support
