Wellington-based | Permanent, Full-time role
Join a small, exceptional team and help preserve two of New Zealand's most iconic heritage properties
About the Role
New Zealand's Government Houses are national taonga - historic residences that support the Governor-General in their constitutional, ceremonial, and community leadership roles. The Government House team provides support to the Governor-General, while ensuring the Houses and their grounds are maintained to the highest standards.
As the Procurement and Contract Specialist, you will be part of a small, high-performing team that takes pride in its collaborative and "can-do" culture. You'll lead and manage end-to-end procurement and contract management for both Government Houses. You'll oversee a wide range of projects, from maintenance and conservation to capital works, ensuring value for money, compliance with procurement frameworks, and the continued protection of these nationally significant assets.
This is a hands-on role that combines technical procurement knowledge with strong relationship and project management skills. You'll work closely with suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to deliver results in a unique and high-profile heritage environment. This role is ideal for someone who is proactive, adaptable, and ready to roll up their sleeves to help with whatever needs doing.
You don’t need to be an experienced procurement professional to apply. We’re looking for someone with strong transferable skills, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. Comprehensive training will be provided to help you succeed in this unique and rewarding role.
In this role, you will:
Key Responsibilities
Negotiate terms and conditions with suppliers and stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes.
Build consensus and influence decision-making to support project goals.
Relationship Management:
Develop and maintain strong, professional relationships with suppliers, contractors, and internal teams.
Act as a trusted advisor, fostering collaboration and mutual understanding.
Project & Time Management:
Coordinate procurement activities and oversee a variety of maintenance, conservation, and capital works projects.
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with the Governor-General’s schedule.
Analytical & Problem-Solving:
Evaluate supplier bids and performance to ensure value for money and compliance with procurement frameworks.
Identify risks and develop practical solutions to challenges.
Attention to Detail:
Review and manage contracts to ensure accuracy and compliance with legislative, policy, and organisational standards.
Maintain accurate records and documentation to support effective contract administration.
Building Capability:
Learn and apply procurement frameworks, policies, and guidelines.
Contribute to the development of consistent procurement practices across the organisation.
Hands-On Support:
Jump in to assist with events, functions, and operational activities as needed.
Provide practical support across the team, including minor maintenance tasks and event preparation.
We are looking for a motivated and adaptable individual with a "can-do" attitude and a willingness to learn. While prior procurement experience is not essential, you will bring:
Strong transferable skills, such as negotiation, influencing, and relationship management.
A proactive and solutions-focused approach, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
A practical mindset and the ability to assist with hands-on tasks.
Analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a focus on delivering high-quality outcomes.
A high level of attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and compliance in all aspects of the role.
A desire to learn and develop your skills in procurement and contract management.
Above all, you’ll be someone who thrives in a collaborative team environment and is ready to contribute to the stewardship of New Zealand’s heritage.
This is a rare opportunity to use your procurement and project management skills in a truly unique setting - helping preserve and enhance two of New Zealand's most iconic heritage properties. You'll work within a supportive, high-performing team that values professionalism, collaboration and service.
