Korero mo te turanga - About the role

The Senior Advisor in the Crown Estate Regulation Team uses strong critical analysis and sound judgement to lead the development of regulatory interventions for how the Crown buys, manages and sells land. This includes helping shape the future of the Public Works Act 1981, including developing standards, guidance, operational policy and intervention thinking. A key focus of this work is to enable land to be used for public benefit while also protecting the private property rights of landowners. Its a unique opportunity to contribute to the responsible stewardship and sustainable use of the Crown Estate for the benefit of both current and future generations.

The Senior Advisor is also responsible for assessing and providing advice on Crown Estate risk. You will also have the opportunity to be involved with a range of activities and other legislation that affects Crown-owned land, including the Land Act 1948, and Treaty settlement legislation.

This role often requires engagement with a range of other NZ Government agencies and other stakeholders, which is why the position will be based in our Wellington office.

In a regular day, you will be reviewing and providing advice on our legislation both internally and externally, drafting guidance or education material for users, or leading engagement with Crown agencies or their accredited suppliers who are dealing with land issues. Much of the initial work may involve contributing to and helping to implement legislative change. You will also be expected to mentor junior colleagues and contribute to overall improvements of our system and regulatory regime.

He pukenga tou - Skills & Experience

  • You will have experience with and understanding of government land-related laws and regulations, particularly the Public Works Act 1981 or Land Act 1948.
  • You will be experienced in providing advice in complex regulatory settings and being able to see the "bigger picture" is beneficial.
  • You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills aligned with strong relationship management skills to support you in confidently interacting with suppliers, local authorities and colleagues from across the NZ Government system.
  • You will have an enquiring mind with the ability to identify key issues and develop and maintain effective operational processes
  • You will have initiative, drive, and the ability to manage a varied workload
  • You will have sound understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in relation to property.
  • An understanding of the machinery of government would be beneficial.

The expected appointing range for this role is $105,000 - $125,000 depending on skills and experience.
