We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Analyst to join the RSBED SCI Domain sub-team of the Domains team in Data Service Delivery (DSD) unit at the Ministry of Business, Innovation Employment (MBIE).
As a Senior Data Analyst, you will work closely with your peers to collect, manipulate and interrogate data to deliver robust analytical outputs to our customers and produce the quantitative insights and evidence required for them to be confident in their decision making. You will translate requirements into effective solutions which have a significant impact on the perceived value of the Domains team and the DSD unit. You will lead and manage larger, more complex pieces of work through to completion. Your pride in your work will mean you are creating analytical solutions in a robust manner, that will best serve the Domains team, the DSD unit and our customers. You will also ensure quality and consistency of advice and practices within the Domains team and the DSD unit.
The ideal candidate will have significant technical expertise in statistics and/or data science with strong skills in R, SQL and advanced Excel. You will also have good understanding on how to measure the economic activities at various granular levels, and how the evidence-based decisions are supported by data and analysis. The comprehensive knowledge of the NZ data pertinent to economic development, such as that provided by Stats NZ (both aggregated and unit records) is highly appreciated. And the experience working with the Longitudinal Business Database and the Integrated Data Infrastructure would be a bonus.
This will be complemented by strategic and critical thinking skills, with sound judgement to analyse evidence and issues. You will provide intellectual leadership and support the team by guiding and mentoring colleagues. You will have excellent communication skills and be a natural relationship manager, being comfortable in building relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders across Government and the sector. You will also have a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement and generating new ideas and ways of doing things.
About the TeamThe Domains team in the Data Service Delivery Unit supports policy analysis, regulatory monitoring, and decision-making by delivering high-quality, trusted data assets and innovative analytical solutions. The RSBED SCI Domain sub-team is one of the five domain sub-team that collectively support all MBIE portfolios.
The RSBED SCI Domain sub-team is responsible for building data systems and knowledge bases, being steward of data and analytics products, and providing data, analysis and modelling advice to support policy decision making in the Regions, Sectors, Business and Economic Development (RSBED) and Science and Innovation (SCI) domains.
This role is for the RSBED domain which mainly focuses on the data and evidence related to the economic growth from the lenses of regions, sectors, businesses and others. This role reports to the Lead Domain Analyst (RSBED SCI).

We are keen to hear from you if you have the following:
- Significant experience in data management, statistical analysis and economic modelling.
- Knowledge in regional and/or sectoral economic activities and trends.
- Experience in designing and developing solutions from complex data sources.
- Strong experience using programming languages (such as R) and other tools (such as Excel) to wrangle, mutate and present data.
- Experience using visualisation tools (such as Power BI) to create dashboards/reports would be a bonus.
- Be confident engaging with our diverse stakeholders and have clear communication skills.
- A postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) in Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Econometrics or a related field.
- 3+ years of demonstrable, relevant experience.
- Have a legal right to live and work in New Zealand and be able to satisfy the Ministrys security clearance requirements.
