About the role
The purpose of moderation is to provide assurance that assessment decisions, in relation to assessment standards, are consistent nationally.
The role of Specialist Workforce Moderator (SWF Moderator) is to assist the Kaitakawaenga Aromatawai a-Roto Maori (Assessment and Moderation Facilitators) to carry out national external moderation of matauranga Maori learning areas from the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), nga wahanga ako of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and NZQA managed unit standards that are owned and developed by NZQA Maori Qualifications Services and NZQA National Qualifications Services.
Each moderator is allocated moderation submissions from a number of schools and Tertiary Educational Organisations (TEOs). Most of the workload is spread over six months between June and December, peaking in October when schools/TEOs send in assessment materials and samples of students work for moderation. SWF Moderators may also be asked to work on the development of assessor support materials at other times of the year.
As a NZQA Moderator, you will be responsible for moderating assessor judgements and assessment materials if required, to ensure consistency with the national standard. You will liaise with and report to the Kaitakawaenga Aromatawai A-Roto Maori who provide ongoing professional support.
Professional and Personal Qualities
The Moderator will demonstrate:
- Sufficient knowledge and experience in assessing Legal Studies. This will help you to establish and maintain credibility with allocated kura and education organisations.
- Current experience in assessing achievement standards and/or unit standards.
- An understanding of the principles of standards-based assessment and the purpose of moderation.
- An understanding of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement and/or New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
- Knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of the partners of the Treaty of Waitangi in an educational setting.
- The ability to establish constructive working relationships with other professionals.
- The ability to implement and maintain appropriate administrative and communication systems.
- Clear and effective communication skills and ability to tailor your communication to different audiences, as appropriate.
- Sound judgement and demonstrated ability to make robust, evidence-based decisions.
- Experience in facilitating workshops or delivering presentations at regional or national conferences.
- Ability to operate competently in an online environment and adept at learning and utilising online tools.
Qualifications Required
- A teaching qualification or equivalent.
- A degree relevant to the area of subject expertise.
- Regional or national involvement in the subject area - we are looking for people who dont only teach, but also have involvement in teaching groups, subject associations or communities of practice.
Te Ohu Aromatawai a-Roto (Internals) Unit Overview
The Te Ohu Aromatawai a-Roto business unit is responsible for the quality assurance of internal assessment which takes place in kura and education organisations for credit towards national certificates. This includes the external moderation of samples of student work each year and the provision of assessor support for school-based internal standards.
