School of Food The School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences leads research and

Technology and teaching in the discipline areas of food technology, biochemistry,

Natural Sciences: chemistry, ecology and conservation, marine biology, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, and zoology. Our interdisciplinary

Accountabilities In working in conjunction with the School of Food Technology and Natural

Laboratory Safety Sciences safety management team, this role will assist the Cetacean Pathology

Management Unit (CPU) with:

  • The identification of all threats of harm (hazards) arising out of CPU

activity and ensuring appropriate safety controls are present,

monitored and effective.

  • Development, implementation and monitoring of Standard/Safe

Operating Procedures in line with the Massey University Occupational

Health and Safety Management Framework, Guidance & Procedures.

  • Undertaking duties for role of Laboratory Manager (Hazardous

Substances) for the unit and assuming the duties and requirements of

that position as described in Part 18 of the Health and Safety at Work

(Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 and Massey University

interpretation of those Duties.

  • Ensuring safe operations management of all hazardous substances in

line with the requirement of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous

Substances) Regulations 2017, which, at a minimum will include:

  • Maintaining a full inventory of hazardous substances, used,

stored, handled, or manufactured by the unit.

  • Ensuring all containers containing a hazardous substance are

labelled correctly.

  • Maintaining a database of Safety Data Sheets for all hazardous

Substances stored, used, handled or manufactured by the Unit.

  • Ensuring all personnel of the Unit are trained in the safe use of all

hazardous substances, or where training is not immediately

available, that all persons are appropriately supervised when

using, handling, storing or manufacturing a hazardous substance.

  • To act as store manager where separate storage facilities are

required for the storage of hazardous substances, including

containers that contain specimens preserved within a hazardous

substance and to maintain all appropriate documentation,

testing of facilities and plans including those where additional

legislative controls are required, such as a Location Compliance

Certificate.

  • The development, maintenance, and annual testing of appropriate

Emergency Response Plans for hazardous substances.

  • Maintaining at all times MPI compliance via safe operations

management of biological hazards during dissections, tissue

collection, storage and waste disposal.

  • Implementing, maintaining, and testing all Emergency Response Plans,

as required by Massey University.

  • The use of relevant safety management systems such as MySafety and

MasseySafe for identification and effective management of all threats

of harm associated with fieldwork, and for prompt reporting of safety

Incidents/Hazards.

  • Safe operations support for team-based research activities both in the
field (live stranding response and postmortem recovery) and the laboratory. Duties include equipment/PPE maintenance and training, recovery and/or sampling of stranded marine mammals in collaboration with DOC and iwi partners (including iwi consultation and burial of taonga remains)
  • The maintenance and management of equipment and vehicles used

by the CPU unit.

  • Ensuring timely and accurate data collection using appropriate

methods and inventory/reporting systems for safety compliance.

  • Be trained as a first aider

(a) Service to the Community Academic Citizenship

  • Participate in community service activities that further advance the
profession or field, and which are consistent with the Universitys charter and strategic goals.
  • Assist the School/Institute to develop and strengthen relationships
with professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate Responsibility.
  • Contribute to the broader community and society through the
Universitys obligations under the Education Act to fulfil “the role as critic and conscience of society”.
  • Assist the School/Institute/University to develop an environment,
which gives effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

(b) University Responsibilities

  • Serve on University and/or School/Institute committees.
  • Observe University policy and codes of practice in all teaching,

research, community service and administrative practices.

  • Contribute to the development of a School/Institute environment that
values teamwork, cooperation and collegiality.
  • Contribute to the administration of the School/Institute.

  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the HoS or Group Lead.

Qualifications and Experience Essential:

Qualifications:
  • A relevant Bachelor degree with laboratory and field experience
  • Current (full) NZ Drivers Licence
Preferred:

  • Current First Aid Certificate

Experience: • Have substantial demonstrated laboratory management and hazardous substance management

  • Have substantial field experience.
  • Have demonstrated experience in the handling of marine mammals.
  • Have an understanding of Tikanga.
  • Have experience in safe operations technical support in laboratory
and field work activities with up to date competency or training verification
