Key Responsibilities / Main Tasks
- Monitor laying hens daily using the inspection trolleys at Mangatawhiri or Harrisville by climbing the rows with a torch and remove any sick or dead hens and put them in the appropriate place as soon as they are identified to ensure the safe and effective operation of the egg collection system.
- Ensure that at no stage the inspection trolleys are left in the shed isles while the feed trolleys are in operation.
- Monitor feed and water and make any appropriate changes or repairs to ensure that birds have access to feed and water at all times.
- Keep the feed systems free from obstructions and repair any leaks that may occur from time to time in the augers taking all necessary safety precautions when maintaining the feed system including isolating all electricity.
- Maintain the water system including the replacement of any water nipples and rubber seals as required.
- Monitor the feed and water storage levels and notify management of any issues as soon as they are identified.
- Understand how to operate, clean and maintain the manure system including making the appropriate checks to ensure that breakdowns are minimised and damage avoided.
- Load manure onto trucks using the manure system and monitor its operation including the documentation.
- Maintain the manure system including regular greasing of bearings and oiling of drive chains.
- Clean manure scrapers, ensure that the turning off of the extraction fans for the purpose of cleaning is kept to a minimum. The period where the fans are in the off position is not to exceed 2 minutes at any time followed by a period in the on position of no less than 2 minutes. At no stage are the extraction fans to be left in the off position and unattended for long intervals as this will be considered serious misconduct.
- Keep manure pits clean following the operation of the manure system. Keep the sheds in a clean and tidy state with regular sweeping and blowing of the shed, walls, cages, tops of cages, shed ceiling, floors and all electrical motors so that there is no obvious dust or cobweb build up.
- Maintaining the cages and egg production system including oiling of any drive chains, regularly full oil stations on the main egg conveyor, replacement of any damaged cage doors and the repair of any damaged or broken egg belts.
- Monitor the rodent population regularly and administer rodenticide as and when necessary in the appropriate places.
- Assist with the depopulation in the laying sheds and the vaccinating and housing up of new laying hens.
Other duties
- Keep the fenced areas surrounding the poultry operation clean and tidy. M
- Make sure all documentation is completed correctly including the RMP documentation.
- Keep kitchen/toilets – clean and tidy including rubbish bins emptied, on a daily basis.
- Inform management of any issues immediately. Perform all other general farm duties conducive with good farm management practices and always work productively as part of a team.
- Other jobs that may be required from time to time to help the business run efficiently.
