Summary:

FreshChoice Whanganui is seeking a versatile Baker to produce a wide array of daily essentials, artisan breads, and sweet treats. Beyond traditional baking, this unique role requires culinary flair to prepare authentic, ready-made Indian curries and meals for our grab-and-go section. If you have solid baking experience, culinary versatility, and high standards for quality and food safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Baking & Pastry Production: Prepare and bake a diverse range of bakery items daily, including plain and specialty bread rolls (e.g., ciabatta, cheese & bacon), artisan loaves (e.g., sourdough), Turkish bread, and sandwich loaves.
  • Sweet Treats: Create a variety of sweet baked goods such as decorated cakes (e.g., Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, Apple Crumble), slices (e.g., caramel, raspberry, fudge brownie), muffins, scones, and gourmet cookies.
  • Specialty Ready-Made Meals: Prepare, cook, and package ready-made Indian curries and meals (e.g., Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, vegetarian curries, rice dishes, etc.) to a high standard to be sold alongside our bakery offerings.
  • Quality Control: Ensure all baked goods and prepared meals meet our strict quality, taste, and visual presentation standards.
  • Inventory & Ordering: Monitor ingredient stock levels, assist with ordering supplies, and minimize food waste through accurate production planning.
  • Food Safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and hygienic workspace, strictly adhering to all food health and safety regulations and standard operating procedures.

Requirements:

  • Experience/Education: Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a bakery or commercial kitchen setting, OR a recognized Level 4 Qualification in Baking, Culinary Arts, or a related field.
  • Culinary Versatility: Proven ability to bake a wide range of breads, cakes, and pastries, combined with the culinary knowledge and experience required to cook authentic, high-quality Indian curries and meals.
  • Time Management: Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle early morning starts and manage multiple preparations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to handle the physical demands of the role, including standing for long periods, lifting heavy ingredient sacks (e.g., flour), and working with commercial oven equipment.
  • Team Player: Strong communication skills and a positive, collaborative attitude.
